The Battle of Britain Visitor Centre is a cultural public sector building built on Grade 1 listed site of national historical significance. The Centre covers 2000m sq and is set across two levels incorporating 520m sq exhibition space, a 100 seat auditorium, conference facilities and a café.
The structure is comprised of a steel frame with metal deck upper floors, built on top of a reinforced concrete ground slab and piled foundations.
Norder’s responsibility for this project included all structural and civil elements as well as all external architectural hard and soft landscaping elements. The foremost challenge was to provide a unique and challenging steel frame design to meet Pattern Architect’s ambitious geometric form.
The use of collaborative building models and integral expert site advice assisted the co-ordination of the cladding and curtain wall installation within the accelerated timeframe, ensuring the project was completed in just 52 weeks.
